Portrait of the best E-Commerce Director – Is it about the “e” | POLL

A recent review on behalf of a client led me to meet the e-Commerce Directors/Vice-Presidents of some of the most iconic Luxury Brands around the globe.

As I wondered why some where more successful than others, I realised what the successful ones had in common.. and by successful I meant those achieving their projected financial objectives as well as brand growth, innovation and protection targets.

Here is my take on it, along with a poll offering you the opportunity to contribute.

A successful online retail professional is a General Manager, with a real financial accountability and who works across the business in partnership with Buying, Communications and Branding.

  • Commercial acumen and experience: in depth understanding of retail traffic drivers (online and offline) and a real expertise in Buying and Merchandising..
  • Financial & Analytics skills: ability to build an end-to-end P&L and investment plan – and to manage it on a day to day basis. An analytics expert, he/she will define the right metrics on which the business can impact.. Not simply build a one-pager based on wishful thinking and standard KPIs.
  • Technical expertise: Enterprise Architecture is their bread and butter and Retail infrastructure as well as proven track record in Project/Programme management in complex environments.
  • Board level presence and authority – in general part of Direct Retail and/or Marketing and not purely Brand/Communication. the Key is accountability.

In a nutshell a true Director, as in an orchestra.. But let’s see what you say.
